Horton Grove is a group of houses at the former Bennehan-Cameron plantation complex in North Carolina, associated with Stagville Plantation, where enslaved African Americans lived on a thirty thousand-acre estate held by the Bennehan and Cameron families. Built in the early 1850s by enslaved craftsmen, the quarters represented the most developed form of slave housing at Stagville, with uncommon features such as two stories, shuttered windows, brick chimneys, and raised stone foundations. They are the only surviving two-story slave residences in North Carolina. After emancipation, many formerly enslaved residents remained there as sharecroppers, some into the 1970s, linking slavery, freedom, and the postwar rural South in one landscape.
