Fisherman’s Island State Park is a 2,678-acre public recreation area along six miles of Lake Michigan shoreline southwest of Charlevoix, Michigan. Named for nearby Fisherman Island, about 900 feet offshore, the park is defined by the interaction of lake and dunes. Rolling sand country in the interior is covered with maple, birch, and aspen, while cedar and black spruce bogs interrupt the higher ground. Lake Michigan’s changing water levels have reshaped the shore, and from 1998 to 2016 low water often created a tombolo linking the island to the mainland. The park is valued for its relatively undeveloped character and varied outdoor recreation.
