Ninety Six preserves the site of an early South Carolina backcountry settlement that became one of the state’s most important Revolutionary War places. Established in the early 18th century, the village had about 100 settlers by the American Revolution and later emerged as a key Loyalist center in a deeply divided region. It was the scene of South Carolina’s first land battle of the war in November 1775, when Andrew Williamson sought to recover ammunition and agreed to a truce after being outnumbered. In 1781, British fortifications centered on the Star Fort withstood a 28-day siege by Major General Nathanael Greene’s larger Continental force.
