Jamestown Settlement in Virginia stands beside Historic Jamestowne on Jamestown Island, where the first successful English settlement on mainland North America was founded in 1607. Created in 1957 as Jamestown Festival Park for the colony’s 350th anniversary, it grew into a major center for interpreting early Virginia through reconstructed settings, exhibits, and demonstrations. Its best-known features include a Powhatan town, a recreated colonial fort, and replicas of the Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery. Expanded for the 400th anniversary in 2007, it presents the meeting of Powhatan Indian, European, and African cultures while linking that interpretation to the original archaeological site nearby.
