Olinda was the stone mansion on Hopke Avenue owned by the Hopkes, whose sugar refinery on the Hastings waterfront burned to the ground in 1875. They named the house Olinda, meaning "beautiful" in Portuguese, after the city in Brazil from which their raw sugar was shipped. Photographs of the house and of the family playing tennis were taken in the 1880s. In the early 20th century, Olinda housed a dancing school where local children, wearing white gloves, learned to waltz and fox trot.
