Split Mountain
Nature
Split Mountain is a prominent double-summit peak in northeastern Utah within Dinosaur National Monument, rising steeply above the Green River and closely associated with Split Mountain Canyon, where the river cuts through the uplift. Named in connection with John Wesley Powell’s 1869 expedition, it later received official recognition from the United States Board on Geographic Names. The mountain is especially significant geologically as a nearly symmetrical anticline, with older Weber Sandstone folded above younger Park City rocks, making its unusual structure plainly visible. Its dramatic relief, exposed geology, and canyon setting make it one of the monument’s defining landforms.
