On April 16, 2007, a mass shooting at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia, unfolded in two attacks at West Ambler Johnston Hall and Norris Hall. Undergraduate student Seung-Hui Cho killed 32 people, wounded 17 others, injured six more during escapes, and then killed himself. At Norris Hall, students and faculty tried to barricade doors, warn others, and help classmates flee, and several were killed while protecting others. The attack drew intense international attention, became the deadliest school shooting in U.S. history, exposed failures in mental health reporting and campus response, and helped drive changes in Virginia and federal firearm background-check laws.
