In 1869, about a mile northwest of this site, the first brick schoolhouse was erected on the second flat of the Mokelumne River bank and retained the name of the original little wooden schoolhouse on the first flat, Prince Athearn School. In 1877, a second brick schoolhouse was built at this location on land deeded by Stillman Magee, using some bricks from the original brick schoolhouse at the flat. Thomas Clements donated additional bricks, and community pioneers subscribed money to buy other materials needed to complete the two-story brick schoolhouse. In 1938, that brick schoolhouse was demolished, and some of its bricks were used for the main entrance of Glenview Cemetery. In 1939, the current building was erected at this site. The Lodi School District took domain of the school in the mid 1960s, and the building received some upgrades in 1991. May 27, 2011, was the final day of classes. Later in 2011, a group of citizens, including three school trustees, attended five meetings with the Lodi School District to urge that the school be returned to the town of Clements. To regain the property, some non-profits together with four community members, with Ed Jones presiding as president, officially renamed the building Clements School Community Center.
