Bush River Church, constituted by Daniel Marshall and Philip Mulkey in June, 1771, is one of the oldest Baptist churches in the upcountry. Its original meeting house stood in the old graveyard on a two-acre tract willed to the congregation by Samuel Newman, its first minister. Bush River was the mother church of several antebellum churches.
