Late in the afternoon of April 25, Greene sent William Washington’s cavalry and Captain Robert Kirkwood’s Delaware company back to Hobkirk’s Hill to gather wounded men and stragglers. Seeing Major John Coffin and his Loyalist cavalry on the hill, Washington and Kirkwood maneuvered in hopes of inducing Coffin to attack. The American ruse worked, Coffin charged into an ambush and his troops were routed. The Loyalists fled to Camden, while Washington and Kirkwood rounded up a number of American soldiers and returned to Greene’s camp.
