Skirmish At Yocum Creek
Military
23
On November 15, 1862, elements of three companies of the First Arkansas Cavalry (U.S.) went to Yocum Creek at Duncan Springs to evacuate Unionist families to safety at Elkhorn Tavern, including some related to soldiers in the First. At the Jeremiah Youngblood farm, local Confederates attacked the Unionists, who then set out in pursuit. A Confederate volley mortally wounded one Union trooper before the southern horsemen withdrew. Local lore holds that as many as 7 soldiers on both sides received fatal wounds in the battle.
