La Verendrye Provincial Park is a protected waterway corridor on the Ontario-Minnesota border, linking lakes, rivers, and portages from Quetico Provincial Park to Lake Superior. Named for early explorer Pierre Gaultier de Varennes, sieur de La Vérendrye, it preserves part of the historic voyageur fur trade route that connected Lake Superior with Winnipeg and shaped travel, portaging, and the movement of goods through the Canadian Shield. The park has no staffed facilities, entrance fees, or extensive services, and its boundary waters are open to both Canadian and U.S. citizens. It is also valued for striking scenery, including diabase-capped mesas, and several rare plant species.
