On a ranch, large barns housed livestock, equipment, and harvested crops. This barn contained cow and horse stalls along one wall, a wagon bay along the opposite wall, and a large center area once used to store hay crops and equipment. Busy throughout the year, it also served as a workspace where people made soap and candles, sheared sheep, milked cows, threshed hay, and repaired ranch equipment. Common ranch outbuildings included a blacksmith shed, outhouse, chicken coop, and other structures for animals, equipment, and ranch workers, and a blacksmith shop once stood on the hillside above this barn. In 1900, a ten year old on this ranch might sharpen and repair tools, clean manure from barn stalls, oil leather harnesses, and round up chickens from the yard and lock them up for the night.
