On this site, Union Academy was built by subscription in 1833 and served students near the center of town until it was destroyed by fire in 1870. A brick replacement, called the Kennebunk High and Grammar School, was built in 1871 and enlarged in 1899 to nearly double its size. In 1920, that school was deemed inadequate and torn down. The present brick building was constructed in 1921, and as the town's population grew it too was outgrown. After a new high school was built on Fletcher Street in 1939, this building served as a grammar school until it closed in 2004. It is now a housing community.
