Pinnacle Natural Area Preserve is a 1,147-acre reserve in southwestern Virginia where the Clinch River meets Big Cedar Creek. Named for the Pinnacle, a dolomite formation rising about 400 feet above the creek, it is valued not only for its scenery but also for its unusual biological importance. At least nine rare species and two rare natural communities occur here, including the globally rare Big Cedar Creek millipede, known only from the preserve and a few nearby places. Its limestone cliffs and creek banks also shelter rare plants. Owned and managed by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, the preserve protects habitat while allowing low-impact public access through trails, parking, and a suspension footbridge.
