Redoubt No. 15, just west of Summerfield Road, was defended by Colonel Pinson's 1st Mississippi Cavalry Regiment of Anderson's Brigade. Four hundred men held positions on the west side of the road, while the rest of Armstrong's command present, Ballentine's 7th Mississippi Cavalry, and Dillon's 2nd Mississippi Cavalry held the east side. These 1,000 men, Forrest's veterans, bore the brunt of Long's attack. Lt. Colonel Frank Montgomery of the 1st Mississippi Cavalry recalled that Ballentine's regiment occupied the works on the right of the road and did not expect an assault across the open field, but near sunset a long dark line of men appeared on the ridge, advanced, then charged with a cheer. He wrote that the defenders began firing too soon, yet he could see the deadly effects of their fire as the attackers came nearer, though it did not stop them. Standing on the banquette at the base of the parapet, he fired his Tranter five times into the struggling mass before hearing wild cheering to the right and realizing all was lost as the enemy poured over the works and a mounted column rapidly approached.
