The Castle is the largest and most complex picnic shelter in Guernsey State Park. Built of log and stone by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the mid-1930s as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s plan to provide jobs and conserve the environment, it looks like a stronghold but is easily accessible. Its workmanship, like that of other CCC structures in the park, is exceptional, especially because most of the material was hand crafted. An arch at the west end frames a scenic view of Laramie Peak, and another arch in the museum also provides a view of the peak. The roof was originally made of hand split shake shingles and was later replaced by asphalt shingles similar to those on other park structures. Vandalism has become a major threat to these historic structures.
