Packsaddle Mountain is a prominent summit in Brewster County in far West Texas, rising sharply from the Chihuahuan Desert along Highway 118. Although not especially high by regional standards, it stands out because it climbs steeply above the surrounding terrain in a short distance. Geologically, it is a laccolith formed when intrusive igneous rock pushed upward through older sedimentary layers, tilting the surrounding strata and creating its distinctive isolated shape through uplift and erosion. In this hot arid region, runoff from its slopes drains either eastward through Nine Point Draw or toward Terlingua Creek, both ultimately reaching the Rio Grande.
