The three-day Battle of Gettysburg transformed Little Round Top in profound ways, and evidence of its violent history still marks the landscape. Monuments, memorials, and breastworks left by veterans remain tangible links to the past, while the landscape has also been affected by generations of heavy visitation that contributed to overwhelmed parking areas, safety hazards, significant erosion, degraded vegetation, and poor accessibility. In July 2022, Gettysburg National Military Park closed Little Round Top for a major rehabilitation project intended to reestablish, preserve, and protect the battlefield landscape, including important natural and artificial defenses and historic topographic features essential to understanding the battle, while also improving access and the visitor experience.
