In St. Joseph, Missouri, the Glore Psychiatric Museum preserves the history of mental health treatment through the story of the state hospital beside it and the wider evolution of psychiatric care. Begun in 1966 by Missouri Department of Mental Health employee George Glore and established as a museum in 1967, it grew from his life-size models of early treatment devices into a large collection of hospital artifacts, patient works, and reconstructed therapies. Its exhibits document the harshness of past methods while tracing the adjacent institution from its 1874 opening as State Lunatic Asylum No. 2 through later changes in name, use, and location.
