Airman First Class John L. Levitow of Hartford, Connecticut, became the first enlisted man in the Air Force to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor after his actions on the night of 24 February 1969 during a combat mission in Vietnam. Serving as a loadmaster aboard an AC-47 Spooky gunship hit by enemy mortar fire, he was wounded by shrapnel yet saw an unconscious crewmember lying dangerously near the open cargo door. After crawling to the injured airman and dragging him to safety, he saw an armed, smoking magnesium flare rolling across the cargo floor and, without hesitation, threw himself on it, dragged it to the open door, and pushed it out just as it exploded. The AC-47 gunship served in Southeast Asia from 1964 to 1969, first known as Puff The Magic Dragon before being renamed Spooky in early 1966, and carried three 7.62mm mini-guns capable of firing 9,000 to 18,000 rounds per minute in missions that included hamlet protection, camp defense, truck interdiction, and attack repulsion. The aircraft on display is a C-47B painted and marked to depict an AC-47 assigned to the 14th Air Commando Wing in Southeast Asia during 1969, and its configuration has been restored as closely as possible to that of the AC-47 on which Levitow served. A military version of the commercial DC-3, the C-47 Skytrain served as an Air Force workhorse for nearly 40 years, saw action in both theaters of World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam, and this particular aircraft left inventory in 1969, later served as a U.S. Navy R4D until 1981, and was commissioned again in October 1994.
