Leesburg took its name from the Henslee family, early settlers in the community. A post office was established in 1837. The Rome & Decatur Railroad, later the Southern Railway, began rail service through the town in 1888, and the rail line was abandoned in 1948. Leesburg was incorporated in 1958. Weiss Dam, completed in 1961, lies approximately five miles southwest of the town.
