Fifty-seven men from Waterloo died in the Civil War. Local residents sculpted the individual cenotaphs in their honor. A white marble Star Stone honors all 620,000 Confederate and Union soldiers and sailors who died in the war, with each gilt star representing 1000 lives lost. Citizens of New York, visitors from other states, and people from Canada and Italy incised the stars. The North-South Cenotaph consists of stones and bricks sent from each of the 36 states that existed at the war's end. The Women's Cenotaph pays tribute to all the women of the Civil War. A flagpole carries the United States flag of 1865.
