These millstones are typical of those found in grist mills in North Carolina. Two 42 inch millstones were originally located on Briar Creek near Salisbury, North Carolina, where moving water in the creek provided the power to turn the stones and grind corn into meal. The largest stone, 48 inches in diameter, came from the Staunton River in Virginia.
