Built about 1777 by Captain John Anderson, this block house was the starting point of the road through the wilderness to Kentucky and the station where travelers waited until parties were large enough to defend themselves against Indians on the journey. Anderson died here in 1817, and the structure stood until it burned in 1876. William Brown recorded in his journal that in 1782, after waiting nearby nearly two weeks for company, a group set out for the Wilderness with twelve men and ten guns on Thursday, 18th July.
