Merit Methodist Church was organized in April 1871. Its first pastor was the Rev. W. P. Reed, and its first member was Margaret Owens. Services were held at Merit School. In 1888, land was bought and a frame church was built. It was wrecked by a 1905 storm and then rebuilt. The church still serves descendants of its original members.
