Reverend Alexander Bettis, founder of Bettis Academy, was born August 4, 1836, and died May 13, 1895. He was honored as a born leader and a friend of humanity, gone but not forgotten. The tribute was erected by the Mount Canaan Association in 1942, with Deacon S. Lyod as chairman. Professor A.W. Nicholson was then president and had been for forty years.
