Between 1800 and 1850, during whaling's heyday, East Water Street, now Bay Street, bustled with warehouses, coopers and shipyards, ropewalks for producing ships' riggings, tryworks for boiling down whale blubber into oil for lighting and lubricating, and storehouses for whale oil and whalebone, all industries related to the maritime trades.
