Thompson Mills Forest, a three hundred thirty-acre research forest near Braselton, Georgia, is operated by the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources as Georgia’s official state arboretum. Deeded to the University of Georgia in 1980 by Lenox T. Thornton for teaching, research, and an arboretum of native and exotic trees, it was formally designated the state arboretum in 1991. Since then, its collections have grown from roughly eighty native species to include more than one hundred additional species, now encompassing about ninety percent of Georgia’s native trees. It also features a major pinetum, the Eva Thompson Thornton Garden, a granite outcrop, and walking trails.
