Cleveland's International Women's Air and Space Museum preserves the history of women in aviation and space and documents their continuing contributions. Located at Burke Lakefront Airport, it fills the terminal lobby and west concourse, linking its subject directly to a working aviation setting. The museum grew from a committee of the Ninety-Nines, an organization of women pilots that began collecting artifacts and memorabilia related to women fliers. It opened in Centerville, Ohio, in 1986 in the former home of one of the Wright brothers' uncles, with aviator and Mercury 13 member Bernice Steadman among its co-founders, then moved to Cleveland in 1998 after outgrowing that site.
