At 9:12 a. m. on April 16, 1947, the French freighter Grand Camp exploded, setting off a disaster that killed 576 people, injured 5,000, and destroyed $67 million in property. Its 10,640 pound anchor was later found buried 1/2 mile from the scene of the explosion.
