In 1816, the court ordered a new brick courthouse to be erected adjacent to the existing 1783 courthouse. The building was to be 54 feet long and 34 feet wide, with a 16 by 8 foot portico and an 8 foot wide gallery across the courtroom. It was to stand 5 feet above the ground and have a 20 foot high ceiling. Previous courthouses had been wood.
