Mountain Longleaf National Wildlife Refuge is a 9,016-acre protected area near Anniston, Alabama, on former Fort McClellan land in the Choccolocco Mountains. Created to preserve one of the southeastern United States’ last montane longleaf pine ecosystems, it protects a rare mountain plant community and habitat for endangered and rare species, including the red-cockaded woodpecker, gray bat, white fringeless orchid, and many other plants and animals of concern. Its landscape reflects both military history and ecological value. Public access is limited because parts of the former base are still being cleaned up, though about 3,000 acres are open for low-impact recreation during daylight hours.
