The Iola Winter Sports Club grew out of the Iola Ski Club, organized on January 11, 1910. Waupaca County’s first organized ski jumping tournament was held at School House Ski Hill in the 300 block of west Iola Street on January 30, 1910. A second hill, Slaughterhouse Ski Hill, was erected five blocks east of Main Street in December 1910, and its first tournament was held on January 15, 1911. A third hill, Knutson Ski Hill, was built in 1913, with its first tournament on February 16, 1913, and tournaments continued there until World War I. In February 1920, the scaffold was dismantled and the materials sold because of lack of interest, but local skiers continued competing at other hills through the 1920s and 1930s. Hogsback Ski Hill was built just north of Iola east of Hwy 49 in 1938; its first tournament was held on February 27, 1938, and its first night tournament on March 5, 1939. On March 10, 1938, the Iola Ski Club reorganized as the Iola Winter Sports Club. The last tournament at Hogsback was held on February 20, 1955. Norseman Hill, the fifth ski hill, opened in 1959, with its first tournament on February 22, 1959, and it currently has 5, 10, 30, 40 and 60 meter hills, the last of which was built in 1996.
