Chief Charloe of the Ottawa was the last chief of Oknoksee Village on the Oquanoxas Indian reserve before 1820, and he and his tribe moved westward about 1820. In 1839, a town was formed and platted here and named Charloe after him. Benjamin F. Hollister, proprietor of the town of Charloe, built a courthouse in the village in 1841, the first courthouse built in Paulding County, Ohio.
