Abner Treman was a soldier in the American Revolution and the first settler and founder of the Village of Trumansburg. He served in the Continental Army from 1777 until the end of the war, was one of the twenty picked men who led the daring and successful assault of General Wayne’s Corps upon the British fortifications at Stony Point on the Hudson in July 1779, and in the same year was a member of General Sullivan’s expedition against the Six Nations. For his patriotic service, the State of New York granted him 640 acres of land on this site, where he settled in 1792 and until his death gave of his energy and courage to the foundation and building of this village.
