On the east side of Bayou Lafourche, the most important battle in Lafourche Parish during the War Between the States was fought on June 20 and June 21, 1863, when units of the 23rd Connecticut Volunteers and 25th New York Battery, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Albert Stickney and guarding the crossing of the New Orleans, Opelousas, and Great Western Railroad, repulsed two major attacks by the Second Texas Mounted Rangers under Colonel Charles L. Pyron.
