This land is the traditional territory of the Nomlaki. Land acknowledgements insert an awareness of Indigenous presence and land rights into everyday life, often at the beginning of ceremonies, lectures, or education guides. They offer an explicit yet limited way to recognize the history of colonialism and first nations, as well as the need for change in settler-colonial societies. The Native Lands map is for educational purposes, is imperfect, and does not represent or intend to represent official or legal boundaries of any Indigenous nations; definitive boundaries should be learned from the nation.
