The Pennsylvania Canal was a system of state-built public works created to connect Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Lake Erie. The Delaware Division, running from Bristol to Easton, was begun in 1827, operated by the state from 1831 to 1858, and by private owners until 1931. It has been a State Park since 1940.
