Fleming Point in Albany is a rocky promontory on San Francisco Bay and the only surviving piece of the East Bay’s original shoreline. Used by the Ohlone for shellfish harvesting before foreign settlement, it later took its name from John T. Fleming, who had bought the land and was living there by 1853. In the 19th century and into 1905, explosives manufacturing dominated the waterfront, including plants of the Giant Powder Company and the Judson Dynamite and Powder Company, with major accidental explosions in 1880 and 1892. Later chemical industry, dumping, recreation, and horse racing surrounded a shore that also remains important for local marine life and waterbirds.
