On January 2, 1753, Jesse Pugh the elder purchased a tract of land on both sides of Back Creek from Lord Fairfax. On October 6, 1788, Job Pugh, son of Jesse Pugh Sr., drafted a charger of Pugh Town. On April 20, 1805, Job Pugh sold to his brother Jesse Pugh Jr. a section of land on Back Creek on which Gainesboro now stands, excluding the 10 acres where the Quaker cemetery still remains. By 1820 and afterward, deeds referred to Pugh Town as Gainesboro.
