On 11 June 1995, Mr. Richard A. Hogan and A1C Christopher M. Rezac of the 82d Civil Engineering Squadron at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, voluntarily risked their lives while fighting a flowing crude oil fire after a 2.2 million gallon storage tank erupted near this spot. With complete disregard for their own safety, they showed determination as they tried to reach personnel physically separated by the wall of flames, and their efforts allowed the successful evacuation of other firefighters and tank farm employees from the area. Their exemplary courage and heroism in service to their country reflected the highest credit upon themselves and the United States Air Force.
