Twining Peak is a prominent 13,711-foot summit on Colorado’s Continental Divide, north of Independence Pass and east of Aspen, on the border of Pitkin and Lake counties. Rising where the Mount Massive and Hunter–Fryingpan wilderness areas meet, it sends runoff west toward the Roaring Fork River and east through Lake Creek to the Arkansas River. The mountain is notable for steep relief, climbing sharply above nearby valleys, yet it also offers the shortest paved-highway approach among Colorado’s 200 highest peaks. Officially named in 1974, it honors Dr. Warren Hugh Twining, an Aspen mayor, state legislator, House speaker, and supporter of Western College in Gunnison.
