The Miller-Turner House stands on a 450-acre land grant issued in 1772. Its oldest sections may date to about 1837, when the property was owned by local builder Alexander J. Miller. Originally one story, the house’s second floor was completed in 1896 by owner and businessman Samuel C. Turner. The house remained in the Turner family until 1989. Among its owners were Charles A. Thornwell, who may have lived there while serving in the S. C. legislature, and merchant John D. Murchison, who lived there from 1877 to 1882. The house is said to have boarded teachers for the Bennettsville Female Academy in the early 1900s as well as Army Air Corps instructors during World War II. It was included in the Bennettsville Historic District, established in 1978.
