In June 1862 at Sparta, Champ Ferguson joined Gen'l Morgan's Cavalry as a guide for Morgan's invasion into Kentucky. During the Civil War, Cap't Ferguson and his co-fighters were the only protection the people of the Cumberland and Hickory Valley area had against Federal guerillas. Ferguson was hanged by the Federals in Nashville but, at his request, was buried here in White County.
