For over 200 years, a simple one and one-half story farmhouse with several additions stood on a small hill facing south, with a driveway leading down to New Dover Road. During the Revolutionary War, it was owned by Reuben Ayers, a member of the local militia, and the 9-acre farm was bounded by what is now New Dover Road, Marion Street, and the JFK-Hartwick facility. On June 26, 1777, during the Battle of the Short Hills, British and Hessian forces looted the house and burned the barn. The property changed hands a number of times over the years, with the Campbell family owning it the longest. The farm also had a unique hay barrack used to store hay and fitted with a movable roof, and the house was demolished in 1968.
