John Studebaker operated his wagon works 2.5 miles southeast of here from 1830 to 1836, when he moved west. In 1852 his sons formed the Studebaker Company, which became the world's largest maker of horse-drawn vehicles and, in 1897, a pioneer in the automobile industry.
