Following Fort Henry’s capture, Grant’s Army of the Ohio marched on Fort Donelson in two columns along a former road that followed a telegraph line between Dover and the Tennessee River, with the northernmost column using this road. Leading in battle formation was the 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, under Colonel W.H L. Wallace. Units of the 2nd Division, under Brigadier General C. F. Smith, followed in march column.
