Lehigh Gorge State Park is a 4,548-acre Pennsylvania park along the Lehigh River, extending from the Francis E. Walter Dam in Luzerne County south to Jim Thorpe in Carbon County. Known for its steep wooded slopes, narrow river corridor, white-water rafting, and the Lehigh Gorge Trail on a former railroad line, it also preserves a landscape shaped by Pennsylvania’s early anthracite coal industry. In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, coal discoveries in the region spurred investment in mines, canals, and railroads. Transport centers such as White Haven and Rockport linked the gorge to wider eastern markets, leaving an industrial legacy still visible in the park today.
