USS Arizona (BB-39), a U.S. Navy Pennsylvania-class super-dreadnought battleship named for the 48th state, was built in the second decade of the 20th century and served in training, escort duty, and representation of U.S. interests abroad before her transfer to Pearl Harbor in April 1940. On Sunday morning, December 7, 1941, during the Japanese surprise attack on Hawaii, she was hit by torpedo bombers, and a torpedo detonated her ammunition supply magazine, causing a massive explosion that sank the ship. In the attack, 1177 sailors and Marines aboard USS Arizona perished.
